Rich in Spirit, the documentary  - There are things much more important in life than possessions.  Sometimes it takes a man living on a cardboard box above the train tracks to remind us of what joy is, how we can find laughter even in the most challenging times, how there is hope and faith even in the dark, and how to find gratefulness everyday.  "Rich in Spirit" is a story about seven homeless men and their lessons they have to share.  A feature film documentary about the journey home for the homeless.  (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1471760709/rich-in-spirit-the-documentary-feature-film)

"It
was an amazing night! It was bad, hardcore, and real. I talked to a man outside the mission who said he used to box for that sheriff they made the movie "Walking Tall" about. I talked to criminals who justified their chosen path of crime in order to take care of their family. I asked one "wouldn't it be better for you to be there for them than to end up away from them in jail, like your own father that was in jail and not around for you growing up?" Those at the mission called everyone in around 6pm and I did some recon. Walked over the railroad tracks and found some cover to take a break and decide where to camp for the night. A kind eyed old guy was picking up empty vodka bottles in the grass near where I was. I put on my gloves and started helping him pick up the trash. We talked about the homeless and at the end of the conversation he told me of a camp nearby where some homeless go. Moments later I was walking on a small path covered with brush to a campsite filled with cardboard and empty water bottles. There I met Bill and Mustache. We talked about the meaning of life. Bill remembered asking his dad what the meaning of life was when he was 14. His dad said "the meaning of life is that wet birds never fly at night." Bill laughed remembering how he later was watching Johnny Carson with Jonathan Winters who said the quote. Bill realized that life is... and wet birds never fly at night. The train roared by like it was going to run us over. Happened at least 25-30 times while I was there and I really grew to dislike trains. It was getting dark and they both turned on their mini flashlights to scan the pages of the books they were reading.  With their reading glasses on, they reminded me of two college professors. Bill was reading a Micheal Criton book about miro-nano bots and Mustache was enjoying a Star Trek book. Mustache said "You can only tune out so much". I realized what he meant when around 1:00 am I had been trying to grab some sleep on my cardboard and that damn train kept creeping up and blowing it's horn right in my ear. Not to mention two rather long and fat rats. When I first saw the one, a few feet away from my head, it looked like a football coming towards me in the dark.  One rat must've been gnawning on my shoelace in the night as it now is all frayed and had a plastic tip yesterday. I left camp and headed down to Broadway where couples where finishing up a night of dancing. Grabbed a few hotdogs for some guys on the street corner near Room in the Inn and myself and headed back. Finally got in my truck around 4 am and headed back home for some sleep. I never want to be homeless."  Brad Thornton on Day 1 of shooting field research.
